Heinz-Peter Schlüter (born October 16, 1949 in Rübehorst , Ruppin district ; † November 29, 2015 ) was a German entrepreneur . He was chairman of the supervisory board and sole owner of Trimet Aluminum SE.

Life

Heinz-Peter Schlüter completed his training as a wholesale and foreign trade clerk at W&O Bergmann. He was a metal dealer there from 1971. After working in Hamburg, London and Paris, he was given overall responsibility for the retail sector in 1979; In 1982 he climbed the management level. After the Bergmann Group was sold to Preussag , he was compensated and left the company.

In 1985, Schlüter founded Trimet Metallhandelsgesellschaft, of which he was the sole shareholder. He chose aluminum as a commodity for business operations; For the more expensive copper, the company's tight liquidity seemed inadequate. Schlüter relied on the two-way business early on, in which, in return for selling metal, he took back the scrap metal generated in the production of his customers. This business model proved to be particularly advantageous and effective in advertising when car manufacturers in particular tried to provide evidence of sustainable production methods in the 1990s through eco-audits.

A phase of expansion began with the takeover of an insolvency remelting plant in Gelsenkirchen in 1993. In 1994 Trimet took over a disused smelter and foundry in Essen . In 2001, two East German die casting plants were added in Harzgerode and Sömmerda for the manufacture of engine blocks and gearbox housings for cars. With all these expansions of the business base, Trimet did not have to pay a purchase price, but it saved a company that was already doomed. Trimet invested over 300 million euros in the successful operation of the plants it took over.

In 2006 the Hamburg aluminum works were taken over. Since then, Trimet has been Germany's leading aluminum producer. With over 1900 employees, an annual total production of over 300,000 tons of primary aluminum is achieved; Another 200,000 tons are added from the melting down of scrap.

Until 2015, Schlüter also sat on the supervisory board of the Fortuna Düsseldorf football club .

Honors

Since 2014, Schlüter has been the bearer of the Georgius Agricola Memorial Medal , the highest award of the Society of Metallurgists and Miners eV (GDMB).
