Herbert Schlueter

Herbert Schlueter (born May 16, 1906 in Berlin , † February 15, 2004 in Munich ) was a German writer and translator .

Life

Herbert Schlueter was the son of an industrialist . For economic reasons, he was only able to attend grammar school up to Obersekunda . He then completed an apprenticeship as a banker , but did not practice this profession. In the twenties he dealt intensively with literature and began to write his own narrative works. He had a close friendship with Klaus Mann since 1926 , and through Thomas Mann's mediation , Schlüter's first novel “The Return of the Lost Daughter” was published by S. Fischer Verlag .

After the National Socialist seizure of power in 1933, Herbert Schlueter went to Paris for half a year , but then returned to Germany. Since no further works by Schlüters were allowed to appear under the new regime, the author traveled via Zurich and Barcelona to Cala Ratjada on Mallorca in 1935 , where a group of German exiles were staying at the time. After the fascist coup of General Franco and the beginning of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, Schlueter left Spain and traveled through several stops in the Balkans to Ischia , where he stayed in the following years; he was supported during this time by Hubertus Prince zu Löwenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg . 1941 moved Schlüter to Florence to where he's convening to Wehrmacht received. He served as until 1943 interpreters of air force unit in the Sicilian Catania operates. After contracting malaria , he was transferred to a hospital in Germany. At the end of the Second World War he was taken prisoner of war .

After his return from captivity, Herbert Schlueter lived in Munich, where he was part of the editorial team of the literary magazine “Die Fähre” from 1948 and worked as a publisher's editor . From the mid- 1950s the focus of his work was on translation . He has translated narrative works and non-fiction books from Italian , English , French and Spanish .

Herbert Schlüter was a member of the Association of German Writers and the German PEN Center . He was awarded the Tukan Prize in 1977 and the Federal Cross of Merit in 2001. In 2000, in recognition of his life's work, he received the first translation award from the City of Munich .
