Bernard Wall

Bernard Wall (born 1908 in England , † May 2, 1974 in London ) was a British writer , journalist and translator.

Life

After graduating from Stonyhurst College in Lancashire , Wall studied at the University of Oxford and the University of Friborg in Switzerland . Wall was already active in the Catholic intellectual scene in his youth. In the 1930s he became involved in the Catholic labor movement in London . It was there that Wall met his future wife, Barbara Lucas . Together the two founded the Catholic Worker newspaper . In 1934, Bernard Wall founded Colosseum . Although short-lived and of limited circulation, the Colosseum received a lot of attention from religiously interested intellectuals. Wall and Barbara Lucas married in 1934. The marriage resulted in two daughters. Her daughter Bernardine later also became active as a writer. Until the outbreak of the Second World War , the family lived in England, France , Italy and Switzerland. In 1939 the family settled in London.

After the Second World War, he was one of the co-founders of Changing World magazine . He also wrote the regular column " New Things and Old " in The Catholic Herald , wrote essays and worked as a translator. Together with his wife he wrote Thaw At the Vatican in 1964 on the occasion of the Second Vatican Council . In 1969 he published his autobiography Headlong into Change . In 1973 he won the Society of Authors' John Florio Prize for his translation of Wrestling with Christ by the Italian linguist and writer Luigi Santucci .
