Gerhard Schlueter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gerhard Schlueter (born January 18, 1937 in Rostock ; † February 17, 1998 in Bremen ) was a German artist who mainly devoted himself to painting . As part of the Bremen program “ Art in Public Space ”, he was commissioned several times with extensive artistic work.

Life

Schlüter grew up as the son of a philatelist and stamp dealer in Rostock, where he experienced the times of National Socialism and the Second World War as a child . In the post-war period he began to draw and paint as a teenager. In his father's stamp collections he found motifs, in particular "from nature with a soul" and from "winged beings", which accompanied him throughout his life alongside maritime motifs. Schlüter trained as a painter in what was then the GDR . When he was called up to do his basic military service in the NVA in 1957 , he fled the GDR to West Germany . He managed to get from Rostock to Hamburg on a motorcycle .

In Hamburg, Schlüter worked as a house painter and went to sea for a year . At the end of the 1960s he moved to the Bremen area, where he lived and worked as a freelance artist, partly near Bremen in neighboring Lower Saxony , partly in Bremen-Nord and most recently in the Bremen “ trendy district ”, in the district of Steintor in Humboldtstrasse .

Schlüter was an autodidact as an artist and was assigned to magical realism and partly also to surrealism . As part of the Bremen long-term funding program “Art in Public Spaces” , he received several commissions for public murals and for the artistic design of public spaces, such as in schools . He also created drawings , etchings and, above all, numerous paintings , mainly working with oil paints , but also with acrylic and water-soluble watercolor paints .

He was considered a nonconformist and "liked his freedom above everything".

The Humboldt & Schlüter Art Association

After Schlüter's untimely death, two of his friends, the Bremen artist Erwin Noack (1940–2006) and the Bremen scene innkeeper Günter Parzentny († 2010), founded the Kunstverein Humboldt & Schlüter e. V. The association became Schlüter's lease successor and set up a gallery for art exhibitions in his mezzanine apartment at Humboldtstrasse 67 in Bremen , which at the same time represents a “memorial to the Bremen artist Gerhard Schlüter, who died in 1998”. The art association pursues the concept of "art and pub "; it is currently open every Tuesday to Saturday evening and organizes art exhibitions, book readings as well as film, music and cabaret evenings in its rooms at irregular intervals.

The association now has around 60 members, including many artists from Bremen, and has held around 30 art exhibitions to date. Among other things, at the beginning of 1999 the art association showed the memorial exhibition "Original or Fake?" In honor of Gerhard Schlueter with a selection of his pictures. On the occasion of the ten-year existence of the association, a retrospective of Schlüter works took place at the beginning of 2008 , at which works from the in-house estate of the artist and “founding initiator” as well as from collectors' holdings were exhibited.
