The Humboldt Street is a street in Bremen in the district of Eastern suburb .

It runs in an east-west direction and forms the border between the districts of Steintor in the south and Fesenfeld in the north. At the western end it is bordered by the street Am Dobben . Behind it begins the district of Ostertor , the street is slightly offset as Auf den Häfen continues, for car traffic as a one-way street in the direction of Rembertikreisel. At the eastern end it is bordered by St.-Jürgen-Straße . Behind it is the Bremen-Mitte Clinic (formerly: Central Hospital St.-Jürgen-Strasse , colloquially: St.-Jürgen-Krankenhaus ) in the district of Hulsberg .

For the naming of the cross streets, see the link to the streets as well as the Sankt-Jürgen-Straße after the Sankt-Jürgen Gasthaus and the Vagtstraße after the Fesenfeld farm in the Pagentorner Feldmark.

history

The Dobben was originally a canal that separated Bremen from its surroundings and led from the Weser to what is now Rembertistraße. The only way to cross was at today's Sielwall crossing. It was filled in in 1864 and the street Am Dobben was built in almost its old location . As early as the 1850s, a path to the then new St. Jürgen Hospital was laid in the course of today's Humboldtstrasse; the bridge over the Dobben, required for this, may only have existed for a few years. After the Dobben had been filled in, the road was built up very quickly, and the side roads followed.

Since 1881, the western end of Humboldtstrasse has been accessible by tram running via Am Dobben . Initially this was the ring line of the Great Bremen Horse Railway, which was electrified in 1910 and discontinued in 1942. Line 10 of the Bremen tram has been running here on its way from the main train station to Vor dem Steintor since 1919 . First she drove on through St. Jürgen-Strasse to directly in front of the hospital, so that she reached Humboldtstrasse a second time at the eastern end, but this section was discontinued in 1963.

traffic

The Humboldtstrasse was redesigned after a sewer rehabilitation and has been designated as a bicycle route since the beginning of 2014 . To this end, the following measures were implemented to promote cycling in Bremen :

  • The narrow bike paths that existed here before and that had to be used until 1998 have been removed and slammed into the sidewalks.
  • The pedestrian lights at the two crossings Horner Straße and Fehrfeld have been removed.
  • At the two intersections mentioned, all four junctions were paved.
  • The right-for-left rule that was previously introduced to slow down has been lifted at all other junctions in favor of giving way to Humboldtstrasse.

The measures were announced in March 2012 at a residents' meeting. It was feared that removing the traffic lights would lead to accidents, but this did not happen.

The tram line 10 goes via Am Dobben and also serves the Humboldtstraße stop at the western end of the street.

building

Friedenskirche

Most of the buildings on the street and the adjacent side streets are residential buildings and are of the Bremen House type .

The Friedenskirche (No. 175) was built from 1867 to 1869/70 according to plans by Simon Loschen from Johannes Rippe as a brick building in an open field.

The extension of the Bremen Health Department at the corner of Horner Strasse was built in 1999. There is no entrance from Humboldtstrasse, so the corresponding house numbers (No. 96–110) have not been assigned.

The elementary school on Lessingstrasse has another school building on Humboldtstrasse (No. 183).

The houses No. 7 (built in 1929) and No. 16 (built in 1864) are under monument protection, see the list of cultural monuments in Bremen-Ostliche Vorstadt .
