Erwin Dressel

Erwin Dressel (born June 10, 1909 in Berlin ; † December 17, 1972 there ) was a German composer, arranger and pianist.

education

He attended the Scharwenka-Klindworth Conservatory between 1919 and 1923. During this time (1923) he was able to show his first success with the incidental music to Shakespear's Much Ado About Nothing at the Berlin State Theater. He continued his studies in 1925 at the Hochschule für Musik Berlin with Paul Juon . In addition, he also took up studies at the Goetheanum in Dornach in Switzerland between 1925 and 1926 .

After his return to Berlin in 1926, he worked very closely as a librettist with the poet Arthur Zweininger. Their first mutual success was the satirical opera »Armer Columbus« (1928) Kassel. Other operas followed (see below). In addition to his operas, as a composer he created many works in the fields of symphonic and chamber music as well as popular music.

He also worked as a répétiteur and conductor at the theater in Hanover (1927–28), the Junge Bühne Hamburg (1946–48) and the Berlin State Opera (1948–49) as well as for radio.

His compositional style is in the post-romantic tradition.
