Erwin Riedel

Erwin Riedel (* 1930 in Bullendorf) is a German chemist and university professor. He is the author and editor of several widely used textbooks, which have appeared in numerous editions.

Erwin Riedel studied chemistry in Berlin; in 1959 he obtained his diploma at the TU Berlin , his dissertation from 1965, with which he became Dr.-Ing. PhD, dealt with the crystal chemical and electronic properties of certain magnesium, manganese and iron-containing mixed crystal systems.

In 1970 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on the crystal chemistry of transition metal chalcogenides.

Then he was appointed professor at what was then the "Institute for Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry" at the TU Berlin. He is the author of several popular textbooks: "General and Inorganic Chemistry" is a textbook for students with a minor in chemistry, "Inorganic Chemistry" is a textbook for students with a major. In addition, a volume “Moderne Anorganische Chemie” with changing authors has been published since 1999, for which Riedel acted as founder and editor. The fourth edition of the volume was published in 2012, now edited by Hans-Jürgen Meyer.

At the end of March 1996 he retired.
