Under erythroderma ( "red skin") refers to a reddening of the skin over the entire body. This disease is characterized by an inflammatory reaction and vasodilation of the entire skin. The consequence is a loss of fluid, salt and protein , which, together with secondary infections , can be life-threatening. The vasodilatation leads to a loss of heat and increased sensitivity to cold. Patients with erythroderma typically wear very warm clothes.

Erythroderma is not an independent disease, but a symptom , the cause of which can be various diseases. According to the cause of the reddening of the skin, a distinction is made between two forms of erythroderma: primary erythroderma occurs, for example, in mycosis fungoides , Sézary syndrome , old age erythroderma in men and drug eruptions . The secondary erythroderma is used for example in atopic eczema and psoriasis before.
