Esch tamid

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term eschtamid ( Hebrew אֵשׁ תָּמִיד, literally: "Eternal Fire") describes a fire that according to the Torah ( 3 Mos 6,6  ELB ) had to be constantly maintained on the altar of the Mishkan . This was the job of the Kohanim while the Jerusalem Temple existed.

In modern practice of Jewish life, eschtamid is symbolically kept alive through daily prayer and the study of the Torah .

The Eternal Fire should not be confused with the Ner Tamid , a lamp that is part of the inventory of a synagogue.

reception

The American musician Matisjahu released a song called Aish Tamid , which deals with this topic of the Jewish tradition.
