Impressions from the onion festival

The Esslinger Onion Festival is held annually in the summer Hocketse on the square in Esslingen in Baden-Württemberg .

In the midst of the historic city and castle backdrop of Esslingen, local restaurateurs serve visitors in individual arbours. The offer of the so-called onion hosts consists of regional specialties and drinks. In addition, a small supporting program takes place on a stage. Traditional onion weighing involves weighing a local personality in onions and donating the proceeds to a social institution.

The name of the onion festival goes back to a legend. After this the devil got an onion instead of an apple from a market woman in Esslingen, who recognized him despite his disguise . Thereupon he mocked the Esslingers as Zwieblinger and ran away.

In 2018 the onion festival took place for the 32nd time and also for the last time.
