The Estadio Víctor Jara (until 2004: Estadio Chile ) is a multifunctional sports complex in the west of Santiago de Chile , near the Estación Central and Avenida Alameda . It was built in the style of rationalism and opened as Estadio Chile in 1949 . The maximum capacity is 6500 people.
In 2004 it was renamed. The new name Estadio Víctor Jara is reminiscent of the folk singer Víctor Jara , who was arrested by the Chilean army with thousands of other opposition members in the two most important stadiums of Santiago, the Estadio Chile and the Estadio Nacional de Chile , during the 1973 coup . Jara was tortured and murdered.
Today the stadium is used to host various sports competitions, such as volleyball or basketball . Various music events were also held there.
The Estadio Víctor Jara is a steel structure with 30 cm thick reinforced concrete walls.
The Unión Latinoamericana metro stop provides access to the sports complex.
