Ethics initiative

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The ethics initiative ( original and official spelling ethik.initiative ) was a cantonal popular initiative in the canton of Graubünden that was put to the vote on May 17, 2009. It had been submitted by the Graubünden cantonal section of the Juso and demanded the abolition of religious education and the introduction of ethics classes at elementary schools, which should be compulsory for all pupils and replace denominational religious education. The Grisons Grand Council rejected this referendum and proposed a counter-proposal, which was also put to the vote on May 17, 2009. This demanded the introduction of a compulsory school subject religious studies and ethics in addition to denominational religious instruction - which can be reduced to one hour per week - under the responsibility of the religious communities recognized under public law.

The counter-proposal of the Grand Council and the regional churches was accepted with a ratio of 70:30 and the ethics initiative was rejected.
