Eucalyptus is an open source infrastructure for using cloud computing on computer clusters . The name is an acronym for Elastic Utility Computing Architecture for Linking Your Programs To Useful Systems . It is compatible with Amazon Web Services such as B. S3 and EC2 . Eucalyptus is available as source code as well as RPM and DEB packages. Additionally, it has been included in Canonical's repositories since Ubuntu 9.04 . The project was initiated by the University of California, Santa Barbara .

construction

A Eucalyptus installation consists of the following parts:

  • Cloud controller
  • Walrus server
  • Cluster controller
  • Storage controller
  • Node controller

The cloud controller takes control of the entire cloud. The Walrus server is used to store the so-called buckets globally. Both components are simply available in the cloud. One cluster controller and one storage controller are used for each cluster that is to work in the cloud . Each node within this cluster must have the node controller installed. In order to have an application compute in the cloud, 3 different buckets must first be created and registered with the cloud controller. These buckets then contain the kernel to be used , the ramdisk image and the actual image . If these are correctly installed and registered, an instance of them can be created using the cloud controller . This instance is now distributed by Eucalyptus in the cloud and a public IP address is assigned with which the instance can be accessed.

Product development

The open source software Eucalyptus went through several editions. The first version (1.0) was developed and published in the context of a research project at the University of California, Santa Barbara . Eucalyptus Open Source version 1.5.2 was the first release since Eucalyptus Systems, Inc. was founded. Eucalyptus OpenSource releases are issued twice a year in March and August.

Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (UEC)

From version 1.5, Eucalyptus has been integrated into the free Ubuntu operating system and forms the core of the Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (UEC). From version 1.6.2, Eucalyptus is part of Debian GNU / Linux .

Eucalyptus Enterprise Edition (EE)

Eucalyptus Enterprise Edition (EE) is the commercial edition based on Eucalyptus Open Source.
