OpenNebula is an open source suite of tools for cloud computing . It is intended for the management of heterogeneous infrastructures. As an IaaS cloud solution (Infrastructure as a Service), OpenNebula can be used to create private, public or hybrid clouds.

OpenNebula orchestrates storage, network, virtualization, monitoring and security technologies for the deployment of multi-tier services (e.g. computer clusters ) as virtual machines on distributed infrastructures. Resources from data centers and clouds are allocated based on definable rules.

A report by the European Commission on the future of cloud computing from 2009 states:

"Only few cloud dedicated research projects in the widest sense have been initiated - most prominent amongst them probably OpenNebula."

"Only a few research projects in the broadest sense on the subject of the cloud have been initiated - the most prominent among them is probably OpenNebula."

- European Commission Expert Group Report

The tool collection includes functions for integration, maintenance, scaling, security and accounting. There is also emphasis on standardization , interoperability and portability , which means that users of an OpenNebula-based cloud have the choice between various widely used cloud APIs ( EC2 Query, OGF OCCI and vCloud ) and hypervisors ( Xen , KVM and VMware ). The flexible architecture allows different hardware and software combinations to be combined in one data center .

The OpenNebula project took on a mentoring role in the Google Summer of Code 2010.

OpenNebula is sold commercially by Open Nebula Systems (formerly C12G Labs).

According to a publication in the OpenNebula blog, Microsoft is now receiving support so that OpenNebula will also support HyperV in the future.
