Eugenius I of Toledo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eugenius I of Toledo († around 250 in Deuil-la-Barre ) was the first bishop of Toledo , martyr and saint. His feast day is November 15th.

Eugenius was born in Rome and was a pupil of Saint Dionysius of Paris (St. Denis). He did missionary work in Spain, but returned to France, where he was a victim of the persecution of Christians under Maximian (he was beheaded and his body parts were scattered in a lake).

His body first came to the church of Deuil-la-Barre and was transferred to the cathedral of Saint-Denis between 840 and 856 because of frequent Viking raids. In 1565 he was transferred to Toledo.

The dating of his life is linked to the dating of St. Denis. According to the list of bishops of Toledo, this began in the 1st century, but their names are only listed from 286 onwards.

Sometimes Eugenius II of Toledo is also referred to as Eugenius I.
