The Eulenkopf- or Hamlynmeerkatze ( Cercopithecus hamlyni ) is a primate of the genus monkeys ( Cercopithecus ) within the family of Cercopithecidae (Cercopithecidae).
features
It is covered with a thick gray-green fur that serves as a camouflage in the woods; the salient feature is a white vertical nasal strip. In connection with a horizontal stripe above the eyes, this results in a conspicuous T-shaped face marking. The animals reach a head trunk length of 50 to 65 centimeters and a weight of 4 to 10 kilograms, whereby the males are significantly larger than the females.
distribution and habitat
Owl-capped monkeys are native to the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda . Their habitat are dense forests, mainly bamboo forests .
Way of life
These primates can be found both on the ground and in the trees and are diurnal. They live in small groups, usually fewer than ten animals. The groups consist of a male, several females and their offspring. They are territorial and mark their relatively small territory with the secretion of scent glands on the chest. The animals communicate with one another with a series of sounds.
The main food of the monkeys are bamboo saplings , they also eat fruits, leaves and buds of other plants.
After a gestation period of five to six months, the female usually gives birth to a single young.
threat
The habitat of these animals is relatively small and repeatedly threatened by wars and destruction, which is why the IUCN lists the species as "endangered" ( vulnerable ).
In German zoos they are only kept in an international breeding program in Berlin and Leipzig. Since 2014 the coordination of the European Endangered Species Program has been carried out from Leipzig.
