Eun Me Ahn

Eun Me Ahn (* 1963 in Seoul ) is a South Korean dancer and choreographer .

education

Eun Me Ahn began her training in traditional Korean dance at the age of twelve . She later studied contemporary dance at Ewha Women's University in Seoul. In 1988 she founded the Ahn Eun-Me Company. In 1991 she continued her studies at the Tisch School of the Arts in New York , which she graduated in 1994.

Career

Eun Me Ahn was a member of the Korean Modern Dance Company and the Korean Contemporary Dance Company in Seoul from 1986 to 1992 . Since 1986 she has also been active as a choreographer. In 1993 she moved to New York, where she was successful with full-length choreographies for five seasons from 1995 to 1999. In the pieces she choreographed, she also appears as a soloist as a dancer. After 2000 she was increasingly active in Europe, so since 2001 several times at the Pina Bausch Festival in Wuppertal or in 2003 at the Folkwang dance studio in Essen . In the last few years Eun Me Ahn has been working more and more in South Korea, one focus is the Daegu City Dance Troupe, which she leads . She is also active in other areas, for example in 2002 she created choreographies for the opening event of the World Cup in Daegu . In the 2018-2019 season, Eun Me Ahn was a guest artist at the Théâtre de la Ville Paris .

style

In the beginning, Eun Me Ahn orientated herself according to her statements on shamanic rituals , occupied herself with the work of Isadora Duncan and with contemporary dance from western countries. It was later recognized in reviews as the Korean answer to the sacrosanct art of Japanese Butoh . The Folkwang Tanzstudio describes the artist as follows: “ Eun Me Ahn is an unusual and sensational artist. With her eccentricity, extroversion and her provocative nature, she is an exception not only in her home country. In her pieces she often works with extreme modes of representation, which convince both audiences and critics in their simplicity and power. "
