Euphronius of Tours

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Euphronius of Tours (* approx. 503; † 573) was Bishop of Tours from 556 until his death .

Euphronius came from a Gallo-Roman senatorial family and was a relative of Gregory of Tours . Euphronius became a clergyman at a young age and is possibly identical with a monk of the same name, who is mentioned in the Vita Leobini and who initially settled in the Diocese of Chartres in 533/34 . In any case, he became Bishop of Tours in 556. Gregory reports respectfully about Euphronius, who had several ecclesiastical buildings erected, including the St. Vincent basilica. Euphronius presided over a council in Tours in 567 and was a patron of the poet Venantius Fortunatus .

Gregory of Tours succeeded him as Bishop of Tours ; According to Gregory, Euphronius is said to have been 70 years old when he died.
