Global Climate Forum

The Global Climate Forum (GCF; formerly: European Climate Forum, ECF ) is an international interest group of research institutes , non-governmental organizations , commercial enterprises and individual scientists who deal with climate issues . The GCF brings together business enterprises interested in this topic, representatives from politics and various non-governmental organizations. The GCF's vision is to stimulate open debate on controversial issues and to ensure that such debates are fruitful.

Foundation and organization

The network was founded in September 2001 as a European Climate Forum by seven research institutions on the initiative of Carlo C. Jaeger ( Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research - PIK) and Klaus Hasselmann ( Max Planck Institute for Meteorology ).

Since non-European institutions and members were increasingly involved, the European Climate Forum was renamed the Global Climate Forum (GCF) in 2011 .

The GCF is regulated and administered by a board of directors and a council . The Supervisory Board consists of at least four, but no more than seven members, including the chairman and his deputy. The members are elected for two years each; re-election is possible.

Work and goals

The main work is to formulate and carry out joint studies and projects. In doing so, impulses, concepts and answers to climate issues are to be drafted and possible political approaches that serve sustainable development are to be developed.

The groups with which GCF interacts regularly are:

  • Energy industry as well as large energy consumers
  • Companies in the field of " renewable energies "
  • Insurance and financial companies
  • In charge of politics
  • Non-governmental organizations, particularly in the field of the environment
