European Students of Industrial Engineering and Management (ESTIEM) is the only organization in Europe for students in the field of industrial engineering . The main aim of the organization, founded in 1990, is to promote communication and cooperation between students and technological institutes within Europe. The members of this organization are local student groups from different countries. Today ESTIEM represents a total of over 60,000 students through its 74 members, which extend over 28 European countries.

history

ESTIEM was founded in 1990 by several industrial engineering students from four different countries. Its first statutes were signed by 14 universities from 7 countries. ESTIEM has been an official student organization since 1995, registered in Eindhoven under Dutch law.

structure

Structure of ESTIEM

In the legal sense, the members are local groups (LGs) that are spread across Europe. All LGs are completely independent student organizations, which are mainly composed of industrial engineering students and organize themselves. Your daily business consists of actively organizing and hosting European and local events. This work not only promotes one's own skills, but also helps to build up a strong network of industrial engineering students across the continent.

Members

There are members from over 28 countries in Europe:

  • Austria (2 local groups - Vienna and Graz)
  • Belgium (1 local group - Brussels)
  • Bulgaria (1 local group - Sofia)

Activities and projects

Activities include exchanges between local groups, conferences, case study competitions, lectures, seminars and workshops. The individual projects are discussed below.

TIMES

TIMES stands for “Tournament In Management and Engineering Skills”, which in German means something like “Tournament for Management and Engineering Skills”. TIMES is now considered the largest case study competition for industrial engineers across Europe. This highly regarded event is the flagship among the numerous projects of the European student organization ESTIEM.

This tournament was successfully organized for the 20th time in 2013. Around 250 top teams take part every year. To qualify for the TIMES final, teams must complete two qualifying rounds. The locations of the qualification rounds change annually among the local groups in ESTIEM. However, before the teams can advance to the qualifying rounds, they take part in the local elimination organized by their own college group. The winners of this elimination can then take part in one of the six semi-finals that are offered across Europe. In the week in which the final takes place, all the winning teams from the semi-finals are brought together and the members of the winning team are named Europe's "Industrial Engineers of the Year".

The European case study competition TIMES was launched in 1998. Today it offers an opportunity for 60,000 students from 74 universities in 28 European countries. Around 250 teams compete annually for the title of "Industrial Engineers of the Year".

vision

Vision is a series of events aimed at improving the skills and abilities of industrial engineers. Each event takes place on a specific topic, for example "Vision Data Science". Lectures, workshops and case studies are offered, which are given by professors and business people. There are also company tours and excursions. However, not only academic skills are (further) developed. Participation also increases cultural awareness, as the participants get to know different cities, people and cultures from all parts of Europe.

ESTIEM Summer Academy

The “ESTIEM Summer Academy” (German: “Summer Academy”) was set up so that international students could come together during their summer holidays to hold open discussions, take part in working groups, debates and take part in private lessons from a respected professor. Through the mutual dialogue, the exchange of ideas, the study and coming together of different students from all over the world, all participants gain new ideas and perspectives, not only for their own career path, but also in relation to dealing with other cultures. Each participant writes an essay on the content of the two weeks within the "Summer Academy", which has been led by Prof. Dietrich Brandt since 2003. All written work is collected and published. The works can be found on the ESTIEM website, where they can also be downloaded.

ESTIEM magazine

The ESTIEM magazine is published twice a year, has a circulation of around 10,000 copies and deals with the main topics of industrial engineering, as well as with various articles on past or ongoing events within ESTIEM. Also included are articles by students, professors and experts who were able to actively expand and apply their knowledge in practice. In order to draw attention to themselves in various ways, which can be combined with articles within the magazine, companies have the opportunity to present themselves in the context of contentious topics relating to industrial engineering. The magazine is distributed to all local groups in a short period of time after each general meeting.

Student Guide

With the “Student Guide” an international guide for students is to be created, which is supposed to facilitate their study abroad by collecting information and making it available for students. This is achieved by focusing on the following three areas:

  • Information about studying (e.g. deadlines, courses)
  • Practical information (e.g. accommodation, cost of living)
  • Student activities (e.g. organizations, nightlife, sports)

Europe3D

The idea for this Europe3D project came about in 2006 when the then board of ESTIEM met in Dresden. Within a 5-day seminar, the participants should get to know the main features of the respective host country. A special focus is on national characteristics of politics and the local economy. In order to better understand the local conditions of the various European countries, cultural differences are also examined. Thus the three dimensions under which the host country is presented are: politics, economy and culture. More detailed, theoretical insights into the country are provided by lectures and lectures by experts from business, science and politics. Furthermore, the goal is also pursued, the participants is actively involved in the entire seminar. Particularly with regard to the practical part of the seminar, attempts are made to work actively with companies. The insight into companies should be made clearer by means of excursions, company tours and lectures. At the end of the seminar, the participants have the chance to apply their knowledge within a case study. Examples of topics for this would be “starting a new product” or “solving a problem of intercultural communication”.

BrainTrainer

BrainTrainer is a project that was created to train leadership skills, presentation skills, business and social skills. This is taught to the participants through professional training sessions that run over a day or two. The aim is to support and train the participants to develop themselves more professionally and successfully. This applies to both their work in an organization and their future career. A BrainTrainer project usually lasts six to seven days and contains three to four training sessions focused on different categories:

  • communication
  • presentation
  • Negotiation
  • Team management
  • Business negotiations
  • rhetoric
  • Edit case studies
  • Project management

The trainings are held either by a professional trainer or by a member of ESTIEM who has the necessary expertise in this area. In addition to theoretical teaching, another focus is on the learning-by-doing principle, which is observed in self-experiments. In these, the participants can test and apply their newly learned skills in simulated situations and scenarios from business life.
