The Europpass Truck Toll System GmbH operating on behalf of ASFINAG , the Austrian toll system for vehicles over 3.5 tons on motorways and highways. The company was taken over by ASFINAG with effect from January 1, 2005, to which the toll revenues flow directly. The name disappeared in favor of GO toll.

In addition, a credit card is offered under the name “EuropPass Autostrade” Italy, which is connected to an on-board unit (OBU) for the Italian motorway toll system.

history

Europpass was founded on May 5th, 2002 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Italian Autostrade SpA , after this company, which operates many Italian motorway routes, won the tender for the Austrian toll system. The tasks of Europpass included the planning, construction, financing and operation of the Austrian toll system.

The maintenance of the toll system was concluded with the client ASFINAG for a period of ten years, with an extension of a further five years being possible. After the toll system was set up, Europpass was only responsible for operation. In 2005 it employed around 200 people. The toll amount, use of funds, supervision of the operator, billing and the provision of the toll supervisory bodies have always been regulated by ASFINAG.

At the end of August 2005, the company was taken over by ASFINAG at a price of 208 million euros and incorporated into ASFINAG Maut Service GmbH. Autostrade SpA is said to have made a profit of 130 million euros on the transaction. The name Europpass is no longer used by Asfinag, but goes back to Autostrade SpA.

Technical information

The toll system operated by Europpass is based on OBUs, the GO-Boxes , installed in the vehicles , whose signals from stationary overhead systems on the toll roads are appropriate and forwarded to a central point for billing. Depending on the number of axles in the vehicle, the toll is between € 0.130 and € 0.273 (excluding sales tax ) per kilometer. If a vehicle that is subject to tolls (over 3.5 tons) does not have such a GO-Box, the vehicle will be recorded and the owner will be punished. The system is with the Italian, also from Autostrade per l'Italia operated telepass technically largely identical.
