Eustratios Garidas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eustratios Garidas (Greek Εὐστράτιος Γαριδᾶς ) was 1081-1084 Patriarch of Constantinople .

Life

Eustratios was a monk. He was ordained Ecumenical Patriarch on May 8, 1081 under the influence of Anna Dalassene , mother of Emperor Alexios I.

Eustratios was considered uneducated. He did not oppose the imperial confiscation of sacred objects during the siege of Constantinople by the Normans 1081-1082 and is said to have enriched himself from it. Even the charges against Johannes Italos by his predecessor Kosmas I could not be brought to a conclusion that satisfied the emperor.

In 1084 he was accused of Messalianism , but acquitted. After violent clashes against him, he resigned from the patriarchal office in July. His further fate is unknown.
