Life

Lady Eve Balfour, a niece of the British politician Arthur Balfour , ran a farm in Suffolk, England, after studying agricultural science from 1919 . From the late 1930s she made her farm available to Albert Howard and Robert McCarrison as a trial farm to develop their ideas about organic fertilization and soil life. In 1943 she published her book The Living Soil , which had a great influence on the further development of organic farming in English-speaking countries. She co-founded the Soil Association , which is still the governing body for organic farming in Great Britain .
