Evje is a small town in the province of Agder in southern Norway on the banks of the Otra River . It is the capital of the Evje og Hornnes commune .

Evje used to have a train station on the route of the former Setesdal Railway, which was in operation from 1896 to 1962. Today there is a shopping center there, which includes a bookstore, a restaurant and many retail stores.

From 1912 to 2002 Evje was the location of the Evjemoen military camp, which was used as a camp for Soviet prisoners of war during the Second World War under German occupation . Today there are still some overgrown minefields in the forest. Part of the military site is still used periodically for military exercises.

The municipal administration as well as some commercial enterprises are located in Evjemoen. The municipality's military museum can also be visited there during the Norwegian summer vacation.

Because of the rich mineral deposits, mines were operated in the city for a long time. In Evje there were nickel mines and nickel processing. The Flåt nickel copper mine (1872–1946) was then Europe's largest producer of nickel ore. The ore extracted in Evje was also used in the Kristiansand metal industry . Today these pits are closed and only one tourist mine is still open (the so-called Mineralsti).

The geology museum at the Fennefoss waterfall runs a mineral collection and a home collection as well as the old pharmacy, which used to be a police station. The museum building is one of the oldest preserved buildings in the area.
