Orbital sander

classic orbital sander

An orbital sander also rider or Sander called, is a hand-held electric or air tool for sanding of surfaces by means mounted on a swing plate sandpaper . Orbital grinders are used for pre-grinding and re-grinding work on various materials such as B. hard and soft woods as well as used in paints. The sandpaper is attached to the swing plate by clips or with Velcro . Environmentally and health-friendly work is guaranteed by means of a dust extraction system.

Subdivision of the device category

Classic orbital sander

An eccentrically mounted, rectangular flywheel with the grit sandpaper is set in a circular motion by the motor . With the rectangular sanding plate, machining of work pieces and edges is possible. The grinding stroke is 2 - 3 mm and thus achieves a medium-strong removal rate. This makes the device particularly suitable for fine sanding wooden surfaces.

Due to the rectangular shape of the sanding pad, corners and edges can also be processed very well with a classic orbital sander.

This is more difficult with an eccentric sander or geared eccentric sander due to the round sanding disc.

Rotary eccentric sander
Eccentric sander

Eccentric sander

In contrast to the classic orbital sander, the eccentric sander has a rotating sanding disc, the mostly round sanding disc of which oscillates in a circular manner due to its eccentric mounting.

The eccentric sander is guided parallel to the work surface. It can rotate freely or positively. The removal rate is measurably increased under positive guidance, as a gear ensures a constant circular vibration of the grinding wheel. In addition to metalworking, wood, plastics and glass can also be processed. Eccentric sanders are well suited for the fine sanding of surfaces, the circular grooves in the material to be sanded, which are common with classic orbital sanders, are largely avoided by the combined rotary and oscillating movements. Due to the eccentric movement, you do not have to pay attention to the grain direction of the wood, which means that the removal is 3-4 times higher than with an orbital sander. Due to the round shape of the sanding plate, however, the random orbit sander has difficulties in sanding corners. A triangular sander is a very good counterpart here.

Geared eccentric sander

This grinder also has a gear, with which two levels can usually be set: In the first gear, coarse sanding with large removal and in the second gear, fine sanding / polishing. A switch can be used to connect a gear drive between the motor and the sanding plate, which ensures a high level of material removal. Even very coarse sanding and sanding down of several layers of lacquer or paint are possible.
