The Exeter College Chapel is the Anglican Chapel of Exeter College of the University of Oxford in England . The church has been classified as a grade II * single monument since 1954 .

history

A chapel has been located at Exeter College since 1314. The present church replaces a post-Gothic building from 1623/24, the dilapidation of which has been discussed since 1813. Although a restoration would have been possible, it was finally decided to build a representative new building, for which several architects were considered. Finally, a design by George Gilbert Scott was implemented , which was based on the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris and was intended to create a neo-Gothic chapel in the French Gothic style .

The foundation stone for the new building was laid on November 29, 1856, and consecrated on October 18, 1859 by the Bishop of Oxford , Samuel Wilberforce . In 2007 the chapel underwent a major renovation.
