Exim (originally an acronym for EX perimental I nternet M ailer ) is a mail transfer agent and mail server .

Exim is largely call-compatible with the very traditional MTA Sendmail . Its particular strength lies in its very flexible, but still simple configuration.

The program was developed by Philip Hazel at the University of Cambridge in 1995 and is free software . Exim emerged from Smail -3. The history of Smail goes back well into the 1980s.

Exim can extract data from a large number of data sources / databases and also process or save it flexibly. Furthermore, Exim has built-in regular expressions ( PCRE ) and a simple but very powerful scripting language . Exim also allows you to integrate a Perl interpreter , so that your own Perl scripts can be used. B. Enable connections to other databases or carry out special tests.

The current version 4 has been completely revised and enables a very precise and flexible configuration for spam prevention through an access control list system . Various plugins also enable the content of the emails to be checked for computer viruses , spam and unwanted files.

Exim 4 is the standard MTA on Debian GNU / Linux .
