Securing livelihoods are all measures to maintain and finance both the physical and the socio-cultural subsistence level . In a broader sense, this means maintaining a source of income that is necessary to secure a livelihood , for example a job or a rural or artisanal family business.

In most developed industrialized countries, those who, taking into account the respective overall social context and a need limit defined by the legislature on the basis of scientific knowledge and statistical surveys, cannot or insufficiently secure their livelihood from their own income receive financial help from tax funds that meet their minimum needs ( basic income , Subsistence level) and that of his family or community.

In the Federal Republic of Germany , people in need of help and their families who are unable to work due to illness / incapacity or old age are covered by social assistance according to Book Twelve of the Social Code . Unemployment benefit II / social benefit provides basic security for those in need of assistance who are able to work . The legal regulations are summarized in Book Two of the Social Code . Both performance systems are related to each other. In the event of disputes, the social courts have been responsible for both benefit systems since January 1, 2005 .

For families with low incomes who are dependent on supplementary financial support to support their children, there has been a child supplement since January 1, 2005 . The child allowance is regulated in the Federal Child Benefit Act , Section 6a BKGG.

For over-indebted employees and their families, the seizure protection ensures that they get what they need for life. The protection against seizure is regulated by law in the Code of Civil Procedure (ZPO).

The statutory regulations on private consumer bankruptcy apply to people in over-indebtedness .
