history

In 1945 the exhibition committee was founded at the All Union Chamber of Commerce (VTP). In 1947 it was converted into the Department for Foreign Exhibitions (since 1949 Department for Exhibitions). In 1959, the Sokolniki Park hosted the first US National Industrial Production Exhibition , opened by Nikita Khrushchev and Richard Nixon . The department for foreign exhibitions of the then All Union Chamber of Commerce dealt with the organization of this exhibition on the Soviet side. This department was subsequently transformed into the Administration for International and Foreign Exhibitions in the USSR (UMIV). A little later, Bulgaria , Hungary , Poland , Romania , Czechoslovakia and other countries held their national exhibitions.

In 1964 the Administration for Foreign Exhibitions in the USSR and the Administration for Soviet Exhibitions Abroad were established. In the same year “Expocenter” organized the first international industry exhibition “Stroydormash”. The latest construction and road construction machines and mechanization equipment for construction and assembly work were presented at this fair. 377 companies from 20 countries around the world displayed modern machines, equipment and technologies for construction and road construction work on a total area of 54,000 square meters. As a co-organizer, the State Committee for Construction, Roads and Municipal Machinery appeared at the State Committee of the USSR for Construction. In the 1960s, the Expocenter began developing an exhibition program.

In 1969 the Administration for International and Foreign Exhibitions (UMIV) was formed in the Chamber, consisting of the Department for Foreign Exhibitions, Department for International Exhibitions and other structural units. This division of functions was caused by the emergence of international forums of universal character in addition to the exhibitions to be held at the suggestion of foreign state organizations and private companies. In 1972 the All Union Chamber of Commerce was transformed into the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the USSR. In the same year the all-union association “Expocenter” was founded as a chamber-owned company of the Chamber of Commerce of the USSR. "Expocenter" had the exclusive right to hold international and foreign exhibitions in the USSR.

In the mid-1970s, the USSR Chamber of Commerce and Industry, at the initiative of the USSR Minister of Foreign Trade, NS Patolichev, approached the government with a proposal to build the new exhibition complex on the banks of the Moskva River next to the Krasnaya Presnya Park. The first exhibition hall was built in 1977 and in January 1978 it hosted one of the largest industry exhibitions “Derevoobrabotka”. In the 1980s, the construction of the exhibition complex on Krasnopresnenskaya Nabereshnaya continued. After Hall 1, Halls 2 and 3 as well as the “Forum” exhibition center - a building in the form of the glass pyramid that is unique in terms of its architectural solution - went into operation. In the following years the exhibition complex continued to grow: Halls 4, 5 and 6 were built.

In the mid-1980s, the Expocenter's exhibition program covered all of the main sectors of the USSR economy. The administration for Soviet exhibitions abroad existed until 1989 when it merged with the all-union association "Expocenter". In 1991 "Expocenter" became a stock corporation.

Hall 7 was built in 2002 and embodied the idea of a two-story exhibition complex with mobile exhibition halls. In 2007, Hall 8 with meeting rooms and a conference hall was put into operation. In 2014 "Expocenter" celebrated its 55th anniversary.
