Sokolniki Metro Station

Sokolniki Metro Station

Sokolniki Metro Station opened on May 15, 1935 as part of the oldest construction phase of the Moscow Metro. Until 1965 it served as the north-eastern terminus of the "red" Sokolnitscheskaya line , then the line was extended by another station to Preobrazhenskaya Ploshchad . An underground bridge was also built over the Jausa River on the eastern edge of Sokolniki. Today Sokolniki is widely considered to be the oldest of all Moscow metro stations, as the construction of the metro began in Moscow in November 1931 with the excavation of the first excavation near it.

The station has a single entrance, which is built into an arched vestibule building near the Russakovskaya Street and Sokolniki Park. The vestibule is connected to the platform hall by two flights of stairs and an intermediate corridor on the ticket counter level. The platform hall, which is only nine meters below the surface of the earth, is very flat by Moscow standards, has a rather functional architecture typical of stations in the first Moscow construction phase from 1935: a central platform with ceramic-tiled walls, separated by two rows of square and gray ones Marble clad columns. From this basic shape, the structure of the station is strongly reminiscent of the Arbatskaya underground station , which was also opened on May 15, 1935 and which today belongs to the Filjovskaya line .
