Extraterrestrial intelligence

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI) denotes all possibly existing intelligent forms of extraterrestrial life , but there is no general definition of the term intelligence. The term ETI overlaps with that of the extraterrestrial civilization , which describes hypothetical extraterrestrial life forms with scientific-technical organization , although the definition of the term civilization is not without problems.

The search for ETI is a research subject in astrobiology . Since no extraterrestrial life has yet been found, let alone highly developed life forms, the difficulty of defining EITs has not yet been a problem with direct practical relevance.

Since the middle of the 20th century, various scientific methods ( Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence ) have been used to search for civilizations in space. Extraterrestrial intelligence is also a motif in science fiction .
