Exuperius ( French Exupère d'Agaune , † end of the 3rd century or 302 at Agaunum ) is a saint of the Catholic Church . His feast day is September 22nd .

Vita

Exuperius was according to legend, one of the four knights of the entirely of Christians existing Theban Legion , which towards the end of the 3rd century under Maximian in Agaunum (today St. Maurice in Valais , Switzerland ) the martyr died. The others were Mauritius , Innocentius, and Candidus ; is also Viktor of Xanten contacted with the legion in connection.

Adoration

Exuperius is especially venerated in the Alpine region. He is the patron saint of the Swiss canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden .

presentation

Medieval representations of the saint are unknown. In later portraits he is usually depicted in soldiers' clothing ( tunic , chain mail , chain hood and helmet, as well as with sword and shield). Portraits can be found on the Strasbourg cathedral and in the cathedral of Constance.
