Innocentius (martyr)

St. Innocentius († around 302 near Agaunum , today's Saint-Maurice in the canton of Valais , Switzerland ) is an early Christian martyr . He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church . The feast day of St. Mauritius and its companions are September 22nd .

Innocentius was a soldier with his leader, St. Mauritius and other companions member of the Agaunian Legion , part of the legendary Thebaic Legion . He was beheaded because of his steadfast belief.

The relics of the martyr have been buried in an altar in the south aisle in the palace and parish church of St. Peter and Paul in Kirchheim in Swabia since 1713 . There is a shrine with relics of the saint in the Augustinermuseum in Freiburg.

Representations

At the Anno Shrine (12th century in Siegburg ) he is shown enthroned in a long skirt, with the coat closed on the shoulder, crowned as a martyr and with a palm in his hands. Later he was mostly depicted in contemporary armor, also in Magdeburg Cathedral (around 1230).
