Ferryman Hildebrand

The ferryman Hildebrand is a legend of the city of Wittenberge .

The ferryman connected the banks of the Elbe , which was the border between Germans and Slavs for centuries. According to tradition, during the Thirty Years' War after the Battle of Wittstock he was violently killed by Swedish mercenaries while trying to save fleeing families.
