Wooden walkway when Föri is not in use

Föri is a chain-operated ferry that in the Finnish city of Turku the river Aurajoki crossed. It is about half a kilometer out of town from the Martinsilta, the last bridge over the river, near the Wechterinkuja and Tervahovinkatu streets.

business

Föri is operated daily, in summer (April to September) from 6:15 a.m. to 11 p.m., in winter until 9:30 p.m. If the river is covered by an ice sheet at least 30 cm thick in winter, Föri does not operate, instead a wooden walkway is installed over which the river can be crossed. This last happened in 2003, 2010 and 2011.

Up to 75 passengers can be carried per trip. Initially, up to three horse-drawn vehicles were also transported, whereas today only bicycles are allowed.

At the point of crossing, the Aurajoki is around 78 meters wide and the crossing takes almost 90 seconds. Föri is the only municipal river ferry in Finland.

history

Föri was built in 1903 at the Crichton Vulcan shipyard and has been in operation since 1904, at that time still privately owned. Three years later, the city of Turku bought the ferry, which has since been used free of charge. Initially, the drive was still provided by a steam engine, which was replaced by a diesel drive in 1953. Two diesel engines with an output of 55 kW were used alternately every day. Föri has been operated electrically since May 2017; the batteries of the two electric motors are charged overnight when Föri is not in use.

Surname

The name föri is a term from the Turku dialect and a corruption of the Swedish (färja) or English (ferry) word for ferry . The high Finnish equivalent is Lautta .
