Fümoar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

fümoar (spoken for « Fumoir », smoking room) was a smokers' association in the canton of Basel-Stadt . It was dissolved in 2015.

In September 2008, a referendum in the canton of Basel-Stadt passed a smoking ban , which came into force on April 1, 2010. Due to this smoking ban, smoking is only allowed in unattended and separated rooms. At the same time, a similar federal law came into force on May 1, 2010 .

In order to circumvent this ban on smoking in restaurants, the owners of restaurants, bars and similar places formed an association and expressly operate the restaurants as club premises. Anyone wishing to use such a restaurant must either be a Fümoar member or apply for such a membership without being asked. Only active members, i.e. the 185 or so local owners, were entitled to vote at the meetings. At times the association comprised over 100,000 members and was thus one of the largest associations in Switzerland.

The purpose of "Fümoar" was to evade laws; so the association moved in the legal gray area. In 2013 he was defeated by the federal court, in 2015 it was dissolved.
