Five button tower (Kaufbeuren)
The five-button tower in Kaufbeuren is a defensive tower in the city wall of Kaufbeuren and at the same time the city's landmark. The tower, built in 1420, is a typical Gothic five-button tower that served as the seat of the municipal fire watch . From the hill, the old town could be overlooked and the population could be warned by a bell in the tower at the first signs of fire or other danger. The Türmerstube was inhabited until spring 2014.
A special feature is the shield built into the east facade in 1917, which is studded with 5387 nails as a war symbol in the style of a military man in iron . It shows in the form of a coat of arms the flags of the Central Powers allied in World War I : Ottoman Empire , Bulgaria , German Empire and Austria-Hungary .
