Fürstenwalde-Waldfrieden is a locality and a former building complex in the northeast of the city of Fürstenwalde / Spree . The area at Steinhöfeler Chaussee 1 was used civilly from 1900, military between 1945 and 1994 and existed until 2005.

history

Sanatoriums Waldfrieden

In 1899, a 40-hectare site near the city of Fürstenwalde / Spree was acquired by the Association against the Abuse of Spirit Beverage Berlin eV and gradually expanded into a sanatorium for alcoholics. The main building was put into operation in 1900. After the financially difficult early years, the Waldfrieden Drinkers' Sanatorium became one of the most renowned sanatoriums in Brandenburg because of the quiet, natural surroundings and the trained hospital staff . After a few years, extensive extensions to the site took place. The quarters for staff and the sick as well as the treatment rooms were expanded and a therapeutic farm was built. The institution was expanded into a special clinic for alcoholics under psychological guidance, and a park was created on the large open spaces of the outdoor area. In 1935 the clinic was declared a military area and the clinic was closed.

Use by the Wehrmacht

In 1935, the new Fürstenwalde airfield was built as part of the air base north of Steinhöfeler Chaussee. After the clinic was closed, an air force barracks was built on the site. The former main building of the facility became the infirmary and later the headquarters of the commanding officer of the barracks. When it was founded, the barracks received its own rail connection . The complex was expanded to include living areas for soldiers and officers, garages and storage buildings, and a sports field. The repair hangars and the handling of the airfield were built in the northern part of the facility. Despite the heavy fighting at the Battle of Berlin , the area was hardly affected, with the exception of the airfield.

Soviet and Russian usage

In 1945 the Soviet armed forces occupied Waldfrieden and the rest of the airfield in Germany . By 1957, the area was expanded again to include larger warehouses and larger crew quarters for soldiers. From 1992 the area was operated by the Russian armed forces until the barracks were closed. In August 1994 the military airfield and the former air force barracks were decommissioned.

Development after military use

The northern part of the air base was still released for civil aviation. The entire former military area Waldfrieden was placed under the administration of the Brandenburger Bodengesellschaft (BBG) in 1994 and was not, as expected, taken over by the Bundeswehr due to the poor state of construction . Attempts to return Waldfrieden to civil use failed because of insufficient demand. From 2004 to 2005, Waldfrieden was freed from military contamination and renatured. During the renaturation all barracks buildings south of Steinhöfeler Chaussee were demolished. Only parts of the former cellar system and two entrances to the cellar system have been preserved.

Todays use

Waldfrieden has been part of the Fürstenwalde municipal forest since 2005 . Fürstenwalde airfield was closed in 2010 and a solar park was built over in 2011. The buildings of the former military airport have been demolished since February 2016.
