Fəxrəddin Veysəlli

Fəxrəddin Veysəlli (Fachraddin Vejsälli; born May 13, 1943 in Kürdəmir , Azerbaijani SSR ) is an Azerbaijani linguist who has a great influence on intonation and phonology in Azerbaijan.

Life

From 1950 to 1960 he spent his school years in his hometown Yenik Heimatnd in the district of Kürdəmir . After finishing school, Veysəlli went to Baku, where he studied the German language at the Baku Language University from 1960 to 1965 and obtained a degree in German.

As a fifth year student, he began to work as a German teacher at the Baku Language University. From 1965 to 1966 he did military service. From 1967 to 1970 he worked on the dissertation The German terminal sentence intonation (experimental-phonetic investigations) at Leningrad University under the supervision of the linguist LR Zinder, which he defended in 1971 in Leningrad. From 1970 to 1976 he first worked as a German teacher, after which he became professor and dean of the German faculty.

In 1976 he went to Moscow , where he discussed the topic of his doctoral thesis with colleagues at the Moscow Language University and decided on "The German Vowel Variation" (experimental information and theoretical problems) . After returning from Moscow, he held the chair of general linguistics at the Baku Language University. Between 1977 and 1978 he won a research grant from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and completed his dissertation under the supervision of G. Lindner and W. Tschetschner, which he successfully defended in 1981 at the St. Petersburg University.

Since 1983 he has been a professor at the Baku Language University. Since then he has been dean, chair holder, rector and director of the Nässimi Institute for Linguistics of the Azerbaijani Academy of Sciences for many years. Since 2007 he has been the editor of the magazine he founded, "The Foreign Languages ​​in Asärbaidshan".

Shaped by the Leningrad School, Veysəlli founded the functional consideration of intonation (1971). In addition, he wrote around twenty important works on intonation and phonology, semiotics in 1971, 1981, 1989, 2005, 2008, 2011 etc. as well as on German and general linguistics. His well-known work Problems of Phonetics and Phonology has been translated into Turkish and English and has influenced a whole generation of linguists in Azerbaijan. Veysəlli developed the theory of prosody , the concept of synharmony in Turkic languages, especially Azerbaijani, introduced by him in 1993, is highly valued by colleagues. Veysəlli is a member of the German Association of Germanists . He has given lectures at world congresses for phonetic sciences (1967, 1995) and at world conferences of German teachers (2005, 2009). He worked as an interpreter for the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for 5 years (2002–2007).
