Franco Belge de Fabrication de Combustible

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Franco Belge de Fabrication de Combustible (FBFC) is a subsidiary of Areva NP , which is in turn a subsidiary of the French nuclear company Areva .

The company manufactures fuel assemblies for pressurized water reactors (PWR) and operates factories in Romans-sur-Isère (France) and Dessel (Belgium). The production is based on enriched uranium (UO 2 ), as well as on enriched reprocessed uranium. The factory in Pierrelatte (France) was shut down in 1998 and then largely dismantled; it now only produces unfilled fuel rod cladding or fuel rod bundles.

In the plant in Romans-sur-Isère, where UO 2 powder and pellets as well as accessories for reactor pressure vessels are manufactured, a leak was detected on July 17, 2008, through which uranium-containing liquid had been leaking into the sewer system for an unknown time in the past.
