FFV type 61

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The FFV Type 61 is a wire-operated Swedish heavyweight torpedo .

The torpedo was introduced by the Swedish Navy in 1967. It was mainly designed for use against surface ships. The torpedo can be used by surface ships, submarines and coastal protection units. The computer-controlled target seeker can be operated from on board the respective ship in order to monitor the target approach. If necessary, programmed search patterns for target finding can also be activated by this system. A mixture of hydrogen peroxide and ethanol is used as fuel , which drives a twelve-cylinder steam engine. It only creates a small trail of bubbles that could otherwise give away torpedoes. Compared to modern torpedoes such as the American Mk 48 , however, its range is slightly shorter.

The latest variant, type 613 , has a significantly improved drive system.
