The Fachanwaltsordnung (FAO) is a professional code according to § 59b Paragraph 2 No. 2a BRAO , which regulates the special professional obligations in connection with the use of the specialist lawyer designation in Germany , in particular the approved specialist lawyer designations as well as the requirements and the procedure for their award. The legal basis is Section 43c Paragraph 1 Clause 2 BRAO. The constitutional assembly of the Federal Bar Association issues the FAO as a constitution ( § 191a para. 2 BRAO).

There are currently specialist lawyer titles for twenty-three areas of law. The version dated January 1, 2018 is valid.
