Fake surround

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Fake Surround is Tonproduktionen where stereo productions for 5.1 surround mixes are converted.

Differences from 5.1

The result of a fake surround mix is fundamentally different from the original 5.1 recordings. Because the original sound information consists only of the two stereo channels. In contrast, 5.1 recordings contain an original sound recording for each of the six channels. Therefore, Fake Surround does not offer the sonic possibilities of real surround technology.

Production method

With fake surround, the two stereo signals are processed by different effects processors. These generate six different signals, which are then stored on separate recording tracks.

The stereo signal runs on a center track, from which the center channel results. Two side signals run separately from this. These then result in the surround signals after processing through decorrelation, equalizer , harmonizer , pitch shifter and reverb effect . Finally, the LFE channel is generated by means of a low-pass filter .
