The optional instruction was also a form of instruction in the GDR . It took place outside of normal class hours and was voluntary. After choosing one or more optional courses, they were compulsory. Presence was checked. The strictness of implementation was handled differently from school to school. Pupils from various parallel classes were able to take part in the optional lessons. In some cases, there were certain minimum requirements that had to be achieved in order to be able to take part in the optional lessons. This mainly concerned highly sought-after optional courses, such as computer science. The minimum requirements were therefore to be assessed as a means of controlling the influx of participants.

For example, Russian was compulsory . In contrast, the English and French lessons in the POS took place as optional lessons. Grades for optional language courses were also found on the year-end certificates, but had no influence on the promotion. Which second foreign language was offered as an optional lesson in the POS was up to the school. Students or parents usually had no influence on this. It was mostly English, in some cases French, rarely Spanish. A second foreign language was then also compulsory at EOS .

In addition to the normal lessons, it was also possible to take part in optional lessons in natural science subjects in some subjects, for example in mathematics in a course on complex numbers or chemistry with an extended series of experiments in organic chemistry . In addition to the pedagogical requirements, the topics dealt with were also geared towards the interests of the participating students.

In artistic subjects there was optional compulsory lessons, either in the 11th and 12th school year of the EOS you could either take part in music lessons or art education (drawing).
