Residential buildings on the Falkenried Terraces

The Falkenried terraces , alternative spelling: Falkenried terraces , are a listed residential area in Hamburg-Hoheluft-Ost .

Description and history

The quarter is located northeast of Falkenried street in the Hamburg-Nord district . The building complex consists of 324 two-room apartments with a floor space of 32 to 46 square meters, two lounges, an old glazier and an old locksmith's shop. The buildings, which are intersected by five private roads, are each 140 meters long and, with the exception of the front buildings, have three floors.

The buildings were built in 1890/91 for large working-class families and expanded in 1903. They were partially destroyed during the Second World War in 1941 and 1943. After the demolition of the building had been discussed, the residents founded a tenants' initiative in 1973 to secure the preservation of the apartments. In 1988 the initiative resulted in a cooperative that has managed the apartments ever since.

From 1992 to 1994 the buildings were repaired and modernized.
