Family letters from Fu Lei

The family letters of Fu Lei ( Chinese  傅雷家书 ) are a collection of letters that are published as a book in 1981. The collection contains letters that the translator and art critic Fu Lei (1908–1966) and his wife Zhu Meifu wrote to their sons Fu Cong and Fu Min. The book was edited by Fu Lei at the suggestion of publisher Fan Yong. The first edition was published in August 1981 by SDX Joint Publishing Company. The English and French letters in this book were translated by Jin Shenghua of Hong Kong University of China .

The family letters of Fu Lei contain 186 letters, dating from January 1954 until May 1966th The longest letter (May 11, 1955) contains more than seven thousand words. Many of Fu Min's family letters were lost during the Cultural Revolution . Hence, most of the letters in the book are addressed to Fu Cong, who kept them overseas.

According to Fu Lei, the family letters aim to:

  1. Discussion about art
  2. Stimulating the ideas of young people
  3. Training of writing skills and thinking for Fu Cong
  4. To become an honest mirror

So the letters refer to life and the relationship between art and life.

The first letter

In 1954 Fu Cong traveled to Poland to take part in the fifth International Chopin Competition in Warsaw . On January 17, 1954, Fu Cong's whole family said goodbye at the Shanghai train station. The date of the first letter is "January 18th, 1954 in the evening".
