The family names in Liechtenstein are often regionally concentrated in certain communities. On the occasion of the last survey by the Office for Statistics in Liechtenstein in 2010 on the basis of the data in the Central Register of Persons (ZPR), 2393 surnames of 24145 people with Liechtenstein citizenship and main residence in the Principality of Liechtenstein (FL) were recorded.

Of these 2,393 family names , 1,538 were families in which only three or fewer people had that particular family name (64.27%). 47 of 2393 family names (1.96% of family names) had more than 100 carriers, of which the top 5 (= 14.63% of the resident population with FL citizenship) are the following family names:

  • 802 people with the family name Büchel (3.32% of the resident population with FL citizenship),
  • 746 people with the family name Beck (3.09% of the resident population with FL citizenship),
  • 706 people with the surname Marxer (2.92% of the resident population with FL citizenship),
  • 677 people with the surname Frick (2.80% of the resident population with FL citizenship) and
  • 604 people with the family name Vogt (2.50% of the resident population with FL citizenship).

In the Liechtenstein Landtag , seven of the 25 MPs (28%) have a family name that comes from the top 5 Liechtenstein family names. If the top 50 family names in Liechtenstein are compared with the elected representatives in the state parliament, it becomes apparent that 17 MPs (68%) have such a family name (Top 100: 22 of 25 MPs).
