The aim of the work was to identify all of the proper names (place, corridor, site names) that can be recorded in the past and present on the soil of the eleven Liechtenstein communities of Balzers , Triesen , Triesenberg , Vaduz , Schaan , Planken , Eschen , Mauren , Gamprin , Schellenberg and Ruggell. and water names as well as all personal names), to represent them and to interpret them linguistically.

Between 1986 and 1991, field name maps and an informative booklet were published for all municipalities , which record and locate the current names. The cards are available from the respective municipal administration.

In 1999, the publishing house of the Historical Association for the Principality of Liechtenstein published the six-volume interpretative work on Part I (place names). On 3500 printed pages, the approximately 9200 land names of the principality, 3800 of which are now extinct, are linguistically interpreted.

Since 2003, the same project staff have been involved in processing the country's personal names (around 700 first names, 2900 family names, 6100 nicknames and nicknames and 1400 clan names). This final part II (personal names) was published in mid-December 2008 as a printed work. It comprises a total of 6 volumes with around 3000 printed pages; Volumes 5 and 6 (around 1100 pages) with the name and clan names as well as a structural analysis of almost 100 pages were not published due to concerns about privacy protection.
