Fangxiang

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fangxiang ( 方 響  /  方 响 , fāngxiǎng , fang hsiang ) is a metallophone played in Chinese music from a set of sixteen tuned metal rods made of iron, which hang in two rows of eight on top of each other in a wooden frame.

The panels are the same length and width but differ in thickness. They are struck with a hammer. The fangxiang is similar to the ancient Chinese sound stone game bianqing and the glockenspiel bianzhong , which were used earlier in temple and court music.

In the Chinese musical instrument classification of the " eight sounds " ( bayin ), it belongs to the metal category.
