Fanta Singhateh

Fanta Singhateh ( Fatou Fanta Basse Sagnia or Sagniang ; born July 13, 1929 in Georgetown, now Janjanbureh ) is a former Gambian first lady .

In 1949 she married Farimang Singhateh , who was then medical assistant and later governor-general of the Gambia , who represented Queen Elizabeth II from 1966 to 1970 . In 1964 she completed the Islamic pilgrimage Hajj with her husband . In 1977 her husband died, with whom she had six children.

When her husband was Governor General from 1966 to 1970, she was the first First Lady of the Gambia with Gambian citizenship. Together with her husband, she supported the People's Progressive Party (PPP) in its founding phase and campaigned for the end of colonialism. She used her position to fight poverty and support women and children. From 1966 she got involved in the charity Women's Corona Society.

In 2012 she received the Order of the Republic of The Gambia in the Commander level .
